History of Whitefish Montana

Centuries before the first Caucasian ever set foot on Whitefish; several native American tribes called the area home. The most notable of these include the Bitterroot Salish, the Pend d’Oreille, and the Kootenai.

Experts believe that members of the Kootenai tribe have lived in the area for over 14,000 years, carrying out seasonal buffalo hunts east of the Continental Divide and inhabiting the mountainous terrain on the west.

The town, as we know it today, was created in 1904. At the time, construction of the Great Northern Railway was in full swing, and the railroad ran through the location that is now Whitefish sparking the development of the town.

Before the railroad could be laid or the town constructed, an abundant amount of timber had to be cleared, leaving behind numerous tree stumps around the city, in the streets, and throughout downtown.

This led to the area being called Stumptown by its early residents, whose primary employment was at nearby logging industries and the railroad. It remained this way until the late 1940s when local business people came together to construct a ski resort on Big Mountain to attract tourists and investments to the Whitefish Mt real estate.

At this time, the tourism sector was becoming increasingly significant, and the community decided to change its name, deciding on Whitefish because of its proximity to the nearby Whitefish Lake.

A few decades later, a large portion of passengers who pass through the Whitefish Depot, an essential stop on the Amtrak’s Empire Builder line, are headed for the Whitefish Mountain ski resort on Big Mountain.
