History of Lakeside Montana
Like many other towns in Montana, Lakeside hides its history well. At first glance, it seems like the beautiful beachside town just sprung up one day and kept on running. Unlike other more prominent locations with histories filled bloody wars, railroad stations, and massive industrial complexes with a “downtown” to boot, Lakeside seemed to just happen.
This is because it did just happen. The Lakeside Montana real estate area is not regarded as a proper town, city, village, or borough. Instead, it is an unincorporated part of the Flathead County which shares a border with Somers, another unincorporated community to the north by Somers, and as far as the Lake County line to its south
The area saw a rise in the number of visitors after U.S. Route 93 made the Lakeside more accessible, connecting it to Kalispell on the North end of Flathead Lake and Polson on the south.
Lakeside Montana real estate started as a favorite fishing spot for people around the area as a result of its location: where two creeks flow into the Flathead Lake. Gradually this area grew to become more than just a great fishing spot to become a place of rest for travelers who were weary from traveling around the mountain region.
Although the area doesn’t have any significant history to speak off, it still retains a historical landmark that you won’t find in many other towns: its original schoolhouse. Built in 1906, the Lakeside schoolhouse existed before “Lakeside” was even known as Lakeside.
At the time, the schoolhouse was called “Stoner,” while some people called it “Chautauqua” as a result of the education-movement assemblies that were popular in the 1890s and 1900s.
So, even though residents of Lakeside may not boast of an impressive heritage like other towns in the area, including Whitefish and Kalispell, you will find a glimpse of its history if you look carefully along the shore. There you’ll find the schoolhouse bell tower, an icon, and reminder of Lakeside’s history and the preservation of a landmark.
